UFC’s White is ready to bring Carano into the fold

Finally some good news….as always join us on SportsGeeks to discuss this mater even more!

UFC’s White is ready to bring Carano into the fold - MMA Experts Blog - Mixed Martial Arts - Yahoo! Sports

In a sudden change of heart, UFC president Dana White said that he’s willing to promote women’s fighting. Neil Davidson of the Canadian Press reported that White told fans during a Q & A session in Toronto that he is interested female fighter Gina Carano. White said that he would welcome Carano (pictured on the right) to fight under Zuffa’s World Extreme Cagefighting banner:

“Gina Carano is a star, I think she’s talented. I think she’s got all the tools, so what I’m willing to do is bring Gina into the WEC. We could do fights whenever there’s a challenger for Gina. That’s how I’ll test the waters and see how it goes.”

In the past, White has consistently said that he wasn’t interested in promoting female MMA:

“I’m not a huge fan of women fighting. Period. Not to say that I don’t acknowledge that there are amazing female athletes out there in every sport. I just think right now we had a hard enough time getting over the stigma of the men”

This could be a huge boost for Carano and the WEC. She gets to continue fighting on free television on Versus and the WEC could see a nice ratings boost.

Carano’s previous promoter, EliteXC went out of business three weeks ago. Unless there’s some unforeseen legal hurdles, Carano is a free agent. On CBS, she was a ratings monsters drawing a combined 10 million-plus viewers in two fights against Kaitlin Young and Kelly Kobold that ranked amongst the top 10 highest viewed fights in mixed martial arts history.

Dempster re-signs with Cubs | cubs.com: News

The Cubs and All-Star Ryan Dempster agreed on Tuesday to a four-year contract.

Published reports said the new contract is worth at least $52 million. The signing secures the free agent right-hander’s services through 2012.

Dempster, 31, went 17-6 with a 2.96 ERA for Chicago last season after returning to the rotation on a full-time basis for the first time since 2002, and after saving 85 games for the Cubs from 2005-07. He finished in the top seven in the National League in wins, ERA and strikeouts and made the All-Star team for the first time since 2000.

He set a career high and tied for third in the National League in wins, ranked fourth in the league in ERA and was third with a .227 batting average against. He also allowed only 14 home runs in 206 2/3 innings and turned in 21 quality starts, tied with Ted Lilly for most on the team.

Dempster began last season 10-0 at Wrigley Field, the first Cubs pitcher to do so since Rick Reuschel in 1977. Dempster finished the campaign 14-3 at Wrigley, the most home victories by a Cubs pitcher since Fergie Jenkins won a franchise-record 15 home games in 1967.

The Cubs went 22-11 in his starts, a .667 winning percentage, and Dempster ranked fourth in the league with a .769 winning percentage.

Dempster remains in a Cubs rotation that includes holdovers Carlos Zambrano, Lilly and Rich Harden. The Cubs have also had discussions with San Diego regarding a possible trade involving right-hander and 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy.

Dempster is 76-81 with 87 saves and a 4.55 ERA in parts of 11 Major League seasons. Since joining Chicago prior to the 2004 season, he is 26-26 with 87 saves and a 3.59 ERA. He was an NL All-Star while with the Marlins in 2000.

3 Vikings defensive linemen facing suspensions

⊆ November 17th, 2008 by rammy | ˜ No Comments »

The Williams wall goes down, well this is not what I expected in the NFL this year, it does seem weird that the NFL is becoming a haven for drugs and thugs this year, can the NFL change that attitude somehow….I would like to know

3 Vikings defensive linemen facing suspensions - NFL - Yahoo! Sports

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP)—As three Minnesota defensive linemen travel to New York this week to meet with the NFL, they could be bringing the Vikings’ playoff fate with them.

Jared Allen, Pat Williams and Kevin Williams all will meet with league officials in hopes of avoiding suspensions that would gut the team’s biggest strength.

The Williams Wall will appear to discuss testing positive for a weight-loss diuretic that is on the list of substances banned by the league. They face four-game suspensions for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

Allen will be there to talk about a hit on Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers two weeks ago that could leave him vulnerable to a suspension because it came two days after he was fined $50,000 for hits on Houston’s Matt Schaub.

Losing three of their biggest—literally and figuratively—stars would be a devastating blow for a team currently tied with Chicago and Green Bay atop the muddled NFC North. Allen leads the team with eight sacks and Kevin Williams is second with seven. All three play a pivotal role in the team’s second-ranked run defense as well.

All three players were unavailable for comment Monday following a 19-13 loss at Tampa Bay on Sunday.

Kevin and Pat Williams declined comment after the game against the Bucs. When Allen was asked by reporters what he will discuss with league officials, he replied, “I have no clue. I’ll find out when I get there.”

Coach Brad Childress was asked about the situation Monday.

“I understand the question and I wish I could give you some insight, but those things are going to be between the league and who the league deals with,” he said. “So it’s difficult for me to comment on that.”

On top of it all, starting end Ray Edwards could face a fine for a late hit on Tampa quarterback Jeff Garcia in the second quarter.

Allen has said all season he never intentionally tries to hurt another player.

“We play a violent sport. We know that and we willingly sign up for it,” Allen said earlier this season when talking about the fines being issued by the league. “We don’t ever purposely go out to hurt anybody, ever.

“I know for myself, I have the utmost respect for everybody who plays this sport. But at the same time, it’s like you can’t make rules to tame it down. This is what we do. We’re grown men. We make the decision to do what we do.”

Childress has defended Allen’s hits, saying it can sometimes be impossible for a player running full speed to let up and avoid an opposing player who gets the ball away a split-second sooner.

That was the case against the Packers, when Allen went unblocked and had a free run at Rodgers. Moments after Rodgers released the ball, Allen hit him high and knocked him down, drawing a roughing-the-passer penalty.

When he looked at the tape last week, Childress said it didn’t appear to be a helmet-to-helmet hit.

“It’s like going from a green light to a red light without a yellow light in between,” Childress said. “He’s full-speed, on the gas, and the ball comes out. … Without being a physics major, I don’t think there’s any way that you can stop on a dime.”

Physics aside, that’s exactly what could happen to the Vikings’ quest for their first playoff appearance since 2004 if the NFL holds true to its historically hard-line nature when it comes to suspensions.

The league’s reputation for sticking to its rulings does not bode well for the Vikings.

The issue has been hovering over the team for the last month, ever since reports that Kevin and Pat Williams tested positive. But quarterback Gus Frerotte, the only starter available in the locker room Monday, said he doesn’t think it’s had a negative affect on the team.

“I don’t even worry about it. I don’t even think about it. It doesn’t bother me at all,” Frerotte said. “It has nothing to do with me, so I don’t even worry about it.”

Giants lineman charged with DWI - NFL - Yahoo! Sports

LITTLE FALLS, N.J. (AP)—New York Giants offensive tackle Kareem McKenzie was charged with drunken driving after a traffic stop Thursday night.

McKenzie was stopped after he cut through a gas station lot at about 9:30 p.m., said Little Falls police Lt. Salvatore Calafiore. A Breathalyzer test found McKenzie’s blood-alcohol level was above New Jersey’s legal limit of 0.08. He was taken to police headquarters and released later that night, Calafiore said.

In a statement issued by the Giants on Friday afternoon after McKenzie had left the stadium, the lineman expressed remorse about the incident.

“I am prepared to deal with the consequences of that situation from both a legal standpoint and as a player in the National Football League,” McKenzie said.

Giants coach Tom Coughlin said the team was aware of the arrest and had spoken with McKenzie. He did not address if it would affect McKenzie’s status for Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.

“The legal process will take its course, and the league will handle this matter,” Coughlin said. “Nobody will be harder on Kareem than Kareem himself. He is very conscientious and has been a first-class citizen since he arrived here with our organization.”

A New Jersey native, he was drafted out of Penn State in the third round by the New York Jets in 2001 and signed with the Giants as a free agent in 2005.

Affliction Owner Resigns

Affliction Owner Resigns

Todd Beard, a founder of the popular Affliction clothing brand, has resigned as an employee from Affliction Inc., its board of directors announced on Friday.

Beard’s resignation appears to be a direct result of a 30-day restraining order granted to Kim Couture, wife of UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture, last Tuesday by the Clark County Justice Court in Las Vegas.

In a signed affidavit that accompanied Couture’s request, she provided evidence of Beard’s conviction on fraud charges in early 1993, in addition to a protection order obtained by former girlfriend Denise Zullo in 1997 and a misdemeanor complaint filed against Beard on Sept. 30 of this year for threatening the bodily harm of Karlos Shaverdian.

Mrs. Couture, vice president of Xtreme Couture and other related companies, had a direct business relationship with Beard for the last two years pertaining to the Xtreme Couture clothing brand, which is co-owned between the two parties.

She wrote that Beard became threatening after she asked him to provide monthly accountings of the clothing brand, as per their signed agreement. Couture claims Beard has neglected to produce said figures for nearly a year.

In her statement, Couture said Beard had “resorted to a series of threats and acts intended to intimidate me and otherwise coerce me to ‘back off’ in my insistence that he and the company give proper accountings.”

Couture stated Beard’s threatening behavior culminated with a series of phone calls on Oct. 17 to Randy and Kim Couture and their attorney, Sam Spira, in which Beard “screamed … that he would ‘get’ us and otherwise make us regret that we had persisted in our efforts to get proper accountings.”

“I would like to apologize for my comments that may have offended Kim and Randy Couture and Mr. Spira,” Beard commented in a statement released on Friday by Affliction Inc. “I had a long-standing relationship with the Coutures, and I was deeply and emotionally hurt by some of their recent business decisions. I have only the best of intentions for the success of the Affliction and Xtreme Couture clothing brands and understand that there are personal issues I must address.”

The release also stated that Affliction Entertainment — which promoted its first mixed martial arts event last July in Anaheim, Calif. — is not controlled by Affliction Inc., and that Beard has no affiliation as “an officer, director, or shareholder” with the fight organization.

Yankees to make CC Sabathia big offer

⊆ November 14th, 2008 by rammy | ˜ No Comments »

This is what I thought might happen and its going to be big too…

Source: Yankees to make CC Sabathia big offer - MLB - Yahoo! Sports

NEW YORK (AP)—Joe Girardi said this week he’d enjoy showing free agents around the new Yankee Stadium. CC Sabathia is one of the players the New York manager has in mind for a tour of the spacious clubhouse, players lounge, indoor batting cage and underground hot tub.

Free-agent season opened Friday with the Yankees planning to give Sabathia a record offer for a pitcher.

The Yankees formulated a proposal to the big lefty that would exceed Johan Santana’s $137.5 million, six-year contract with the New York Mets both in total and average, a baseball official familiar with the negotiations said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to divulge details.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman was to make the offer to Sabathia’s agents, Greg Genske and Scott Parker, either on Friday or in the next few days, the official said.

New York, whose streak of 13 consecutive playoff appearances ended, also plans to make offers to pitchers A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe, the official said.

Cashman and Genske did not return telephone calls seeking comment.

Sabathia went a combined 17-10 for Cleveland and Milwaukee this year after winning the 2007 AL Cy Young Award, and is considered the best starting pitcher in this year’s free-agent class.

On Friday morning, the Yankees gave a media tour of the new ballpark, scheduled to be substantially completed by Feb. 17. The oval clubhouse has wide lockers, with a replica of the stadium frieze above them, and the Yankees hope one will be Sabathia’s.

Other top free-agent starters are likely will wait for Sabathia to set the price for pitchers.

“The signing of CC is going to create probably a truer market for a number of the pitchers, mainly because the clubs that are bidding on CC didn’t get him, and the demand for the other pitchers will be greater,” said agent Scott Boras, who represents free agents Oliver Perez and Lowe.

The 171 players who filed for free agency after the World Series could start negotiating money with all teams starting at 12:01 a.m. EST Friday. Boras, based in California, said his phone was ringing repeatedly late Thursday night.

“I got eight phone calls. They didn’t wait till the business day. You’re talking about owners, your talking about general managers, people taking very aggressive stances with particular players,” said Boras, who also represents outfielder Manny Ramirez and first baseman Mark Teixeira, among the top free-agent sluggers.

“They wanted to make sure they were on the board making offers,” Boras said.

Francisco Rodriguez tops the available relief pitchers, a group that also includes Brian Fuentes and Kerry Wood. Agent Paul Kinzer said he had received inquiries from four teams about K-Rod, who saved a record 62 games for the Los Angeles Angels.

“I just think we’ve got to be patient. We’ll know when the fit’s right,” Kinzer said. “When we get closer, we’ll probably meet with the people, maybe check out the area, living arrangements, that type thing, and then make a decision.”

He also reported an aggressive market for another client, shortstop Rafael Furcal.

“There’s been about five or six serious teams already on him today, and I expect that to even go up because there’s been at least eight or more that have been in contact,” Kinzer said.

Commissioner Bud Selig repeatedly cautions teams to be careful in their spending, but the economic downtown doesn’t appear likely to depress salaries for top players.

“We think that the time of free agents will still be recession-proof,” said Lew Wolff, owner of the low-revenue Oakland Athletics. “We think the second tier will present some opportunities.”

Other high-profile free agents include pitchers Ryan Dempster and Trevor Hoffman; first baseman Jason Giambi; outfielders Garret Anderson, Bobby Abreu, Milton Bradley, Pat Burrell, Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr.; catchers Jason Varitek and Ivan Rodriguez; and third baseman Casey Blake.

“A lot of the owners want to sit down and have a meeting with some of the players,” Boras said. “There’s a couple players in this market that pay for themselves, in Teixeira and Ramirez, and they know that.”

It’s rare that a player spends his entire career with one team. Wood wanted to stay with the Cubs, who instead acquired Kevin Gregg as a less costly alternative.

“It will be tough sitting on the other side,” Wood said.

Showtime pulls plan to auction off EliteXC contracts

Showtime pulls plan to auction off EliteXC contracts | MMAjunkie.com

Showtime has halted plans for a public auction of ProElite assets.

The auction was scheduled for Monday, at which time Showtime was to sell ProElite’s remaining assets, including fighter contracts. However, Showtime in a statement today indicated that it has, at least temporarily, decided not to hold the auction.

“Showtime Networks Inc. has adjourned the previously announced public sale of personal property of ProElite, Inc. and certain of its subsidiaries scheduled for November 17, 2008. Showtime reserves all of its rights, including the right to further adjourn or cancel the public sale and thereafter dispose of such property in a public or private sale or in any other manner provided under its agreements with ProElite and by applicable law.”

Showtime has claimed rights to ProElite’s remaining assets after ProElite defaulted on two promissory notes of $4 million that Showtime lent to the company in June and September. The premium cable network notified the public markets earlier this month of its intentions to auction off those assets.

The cancellation of the auction is a victory for a group of agents who banned together this week together to fight Showtime’s plans. A statement from the agents – Ken Pavia, Monte Cox, Ed Soares, Matt Stansell, Bob Cook, Chas Bowling and Cesar Gracie – warned would-be buyers that they planned to challenge the legality of any sale.

Kim COUTURE FILES RESTRAINING ORDER ON AFFLICTION

⊆ November 13th, 2008 by rammy | ˜ No Comments »

- COUTURE FILES RESTRAINING ORDER ON AFFLICTION - MMA WEEKLY - Mixed Martial Arts & UFC News, Photos, Rankings & more

Kim Couture, wife and business partner of UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture, has filed a lawsuit and been granted a temporary restraining order in a Las Vegas court against Affliction CEO Todd Beard, according to a report by MMAPayout.com.

“The suit alleges that Beard threatened Couture and seeks a restraining order preventing Beard or others working in concert with Beard from interacting, communicating and/or having any contact with Couture, including attending the events surrounding UFC 91 this weekend at the MGM Grand. A temporary restraining order was granted by a judge this morning,” read the report.

The threat allegedly took place after Randy Couture decided to rejoin the ranks of the UFC. He will defend his heavyweight title on Saturday night at UFC 91 against Brock Lesnar.

Kim Couture told MMAWeekly.com, “Yes, it is true. The reports are accurate, but I’m not able to comment further at this time.”

Affliction and Randy Couture are partners in the Xtreme Couture line of clothing, and evidently, Beard did not take kindly to Couture’s return to the UFC. Affliction also runs its own mixed martial arts promotion and is not allowed to promote it or Couture’s clothing line at UFC events.

While appearing on the Scott Ferrall radio show shortly after Couture re-signed with the UFC, Beard made a bold statement about Couture regarding his match-up against Lesnar.

“Randy, if you’re listening right now, I hope (expletive) Lesnar kills you,” Beard stated.

The lawsuit also reportedly includes a private background check on Beard that allegedly unearthed several past felonies with prison time served, according to MMAPayout.
