Best Female Fighter: Sarah Kaufman

Kaufman (10-0) has separated herself from the pack with three wins in three fights, but you can’t make mention of fighter of the year honors on the female side without discussing Aug. 15’s showdown between Gina Carano and Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos. It doesn’t take a genius to suggest the winner between those two stands a good chance of being MMA’s top female fighter in ‘09. So let me suggest it.

Nail polish and a cloud of dust

Cool past article on Dawn from her local paper, just spreading the news so others can read it. Womens Pro Football is here to stay!

thetimesrecord

SOMERVILLE, Mass. — Dawn Herring has been at it for seven years, but the idea is still novel to people she meets: A girl playing pro football?

“After the games Saturday, in the locker room I’m putting on high heels and a dress for the ‘after party,’” Herring explained Tuesday, still in her gear from that night’s practice.

Despite all the state titles the Lisbon High School football team has won over the years, Herring, 27, may be the only former Greyhound currently playing the sport beyond college. And she didn’t first pull on a pair of shoulder pads until after her field hockey career at the University of Southern Maine.

At that time, one of her Huskies teammates had a brother coaching for the Maine Freeze of the National Women’s Football Association. He convinced her to take a shot at the gridiron.

“I loved it,” Herring recalled.

Now, at the end of her seventh regular season as a football player, the 1999 Lisbon High graduate is staring down what she calls “the biggest game I’ve ever been a part of in my athletic career.”

On Saturday night, her current team, the undefeated Boston Militia, will host the Dallas Diamonds in a first round playoff matchup. The Militia — which has dispatched eight opponents this season by an average score of 48-2 — is ranked second in the top tier of teams in the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL) Eastern Conference. The Diamonds are the league’s defending champions.

Game time is 6 p.m. at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville.

Herring’s road to the top level of her sport wasn’t without its bumps. She tore her anterior cruciate ligament near the end of her first season with the Freeze, then in her third season, playing for the IWFL’s Maine Rebels, she broke her ankle.

“Through lots of injuries, I kept coming back,” said Herring, a halfback. “You’re putting your body through a pretty harsh beating, and you work out on the side if you want to get ahead. There are moms out here with kids and full-time jobs. This is a huge commitment.”

Herring was living in Massachusetts and commuting to Old Orchard Beach to play for the Rebels when she suffered the ankle injury. So the following season, she signed on with the Bay State Warriors to reduce her travel time.

Two years later, the Warriors and Mass Mutiny — two Boston-area teams that competed in the second tier of the IWFL — merged to become the Militia and rose to the top tier.

Herring initially moved to Massachusetts to take a job as a regional manager with Abercrombie & Fitch. She now manages a Boston Sports Club in the south end of the city.

But looking back at her days in the Lisbon schools, Herring recalls that it was Sugg Middle School teacher and longtime assistant high school football coach John Murphy who first taught her to throw a football correctly.

“I went to every single Lisbon High School football game — home or away,” she said. “If we had a field hockey game, we’d get in the car afterward and go to the (football) game.”

Now, she’s the one suiting up in the helmet and shoulder pads and stepping onto the gridiron. Although unlike her former Lisbon classmates, she’s often doing it wearing brightly colored nail polish.

“I’m probably one of the girlier girls on the team,” she admitted with a laugh. “(My teammates) give me a hard time about it, but it’s all in good fun. We have a lot of characters in that locker room, and that’s just my character.”

Carano-Cyborg Press Conference More Than Just Another Media Event

mmafanhouse is reporting:

Strikeforce announced Wednesday that they will be holding a press conference at the WaMu Theatre inside New York City’s Madison Square Garden on July 14 to hype the August 15 fight between Gina Carano andCristiane Santos. The event is also open to the public.

Call me crazy, but I think that this is a historic moment for Strikeforce, mixed martial arts and, more specifically, women’s MMA.

Think about it: did you ever think that a promotion not named the UFC would hold a press conference at MSG with the main participants being two female fighters? I sure didn’t.

It should be noted that the UFC could probably hold a similar event at the WaMu Theatre if they wanted to. They once held a UFC 79 viewing party inside MSG, and have scheduled another one at Radio City Music Hall hosted by Frankie Edgar and Matt Hamill for UFC 100.

However, I’m pleasantly surprised to see Strikeforce take this major plunge into the New York City market while doing everything in their power to promote this mega-fight. Now I’m curious as to what kind of media turnout it will generate. One can probably hold a press conference anywhere, but if it isn’t attended by any significant media outlets, it’s probably not worth the effort.

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t anywhere near as significant as actually promoting an MMA event at MSG. Of course, that can’t happen just yet since the sport isn’t regulated in New York state (whenever you’re ready, guys). But kudos to Strikeforce for doing the next best thing by bringing two of its biggest stars to “The Mecca” to help bring a little more attention to their upstart promotion.

NASCAR confirms Mayfield tested positive for meth

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NASCAR confirmed Wednesday that suspended driver Jeremy Mayfield tested positive for methamphetamines.

The confirmation came outside federal court after Mayfield’s attorney mentioned the illegal substance several times during a 45-minute argument against the driver’s indefinite suspension. Court recessed after Bill Diehl’s argument and is set to reconvene Wednesday afternoon.

“We will prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Jeremy Mayfield did violate the NASCAR substance abuse policy and tested positive for methamphetamines,” spokesman Ramsey Poston said.

Diehl argued in court that Mayfield has never shown any characteristics of a meth abuser.

“His teeth were never rotting out, his eyes were not sunken,” Diehl said. “He never displayed any characteristics that are commonly seen by everyone among people who use meth.”

In an affidavit filed last week, Mayfield denied ever using methamphetamines and said he didn’t know how he failed a random drug test taken May 1. He was suspended eight days later after his backup “B” sample also came back positive for a banned substance.

Previously, NASCAR had refused to disclose what substance Mayfield tested positive for, and blacked out the name of the drug in all court filings leading up to Wednesday’s hearing.

Mayfield has blamed his positive test result on the combination of Adderall for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and Claritin-D for allergies, an explanation repeatedly debunked by NASCAR’s program administrator.

Mayfield is challenging the validity of NASCAR’s testing system, and Diehl argued it’s flawed because Mayfield never had the opportunity to get his backup “B” sample tested by an independent laboratory. Nashville, Tenn.-based Aegis Sciences Corp., which runs NASCAR’s testing program, tested both of Mayfield’s samples.

Diehl argued that federal guidelines allow an individual a 72-hour window to have an independent lab analyze a sealed backup sample. He said that when Aegis tested the backup “B” sample two days after the “A” sample came back positive, Mayfield lost any opportunity to challenge the results because the seal had been broken on the second sample.

He also condemned NASCAR for acting as if its policies are above federal guidelines.

“They say ‘We’re not bound by anything. We’re NASCAR. We can do what we want to do,”‘ Diehl said.

Diehl wants U.S. District Court Judge Graham Mullen to reinstate Mayfield on Wednesday in time to travel to this weekend’s race at Daytona International Speedway. He said NASCAR would not be harmed by Mayfield racing this weekend, and the sanctioning body can drug test Mayfield every day going forward.

“Independence Day for Jeremy ought to be today,” Diehl told Mullen, noting that Saturday night’s race falls on the holiday.

Mayfield indicated outside court he will go to Daytona if he’s reinstated, but he was not clear in what capacity. He owns his own low-budget team, but said in court documents last week that he’s had to lay off 10 employees, borrow money from family and sell personal assets to meet his living expenses.

“I want to drive and would love to be there driving,” he said. “But obviously it’s late in the week. But we’ll definitely be there.”

Ownership of the No. 41 Toyota was transferred to his wife, Shana, following his suspension, but she cited financial reasons in not sending the team to the past five races. The team used J.J. Yeley in the first two races following Mayfield’s suspension.

Mullen advised the court he would recess after 75 minutes because he had a funeral to attend and said he’d hear NASCAR when he returned.

“What Bill Diehl proved [Wednesday] is that he has a remarkably vivid imagination in terms of what the procedures are,” Poston said. “NASCAR followed all its procedures. The samples are pristine, and this afternoon we have the opportunity to speak to the judge.”

Mustangs Took Care of Business in Houston

The Lone Star Mustangs (6-2) defeated the H -Town Texas Cyclones(2-5) 31- 0 to
complete their sweep of the former National Champions. The Mustangs finally had the first
game with Houston to be played without rain, lightning, or other distractions. It was a hot 102
degree day at game time…bring on the water!
The Mustangs made some changes in the lineup for the final game. #4 Jennifer Hull
who typically has primarily played quarterback for the Mustangs stepped aside for #9 Leslie
Crow to play the game. Hull moved over to defense and was the leading tackler of the game
with 11 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 1 interception for a touchdown, and a forced fumble. She
played defensive end, inside linebacker, and outside linebacker and played some great
instinctive defense.
Leslie Crow started and finished all but the last play on offense for the Mustangs. Crow
was 5/13 in the air to include a two point conversion fake kick and throw to #62 Etta
Maytubby in the 1st quarter. The head coach of the Mustangs pointed out that Etta
Maytubby made some hand signals to tell him that she was not going to be covered. Coach
Mike then made a simple hand gesture to Crow…without anyone else on the team realizing
the fake was coming, Etta released into the end zone and was wide open for the pass. The
touchdown came on the Hull interception of a sweep toss in the backfield! Crow settled in
after this series and was able to play her first complete game as a Mustang.
#24 Shug Fossis and #11Brittany Satterwhite tacked on a touchdown a piece with good
hard running. Shug was very consistent this year with her “Bus” like running approach.
Brittany displayed her quickness and ability to find the hole with her touchdown run. #13
Brandice Mueller played the majority of the game at running back and receiver, but she
stepped in for one play at quarterback toward the end of the game. With her, #15 Ebony
Jones, # 36 Legs Dixon, and #28 Stuff Spencer (all defensive players) joined Brittany
Satterwhite at receiver. They were all told to “go long” and look back for the ball. Brandice
Mueller took the snap from the shotgun, took a couple of steps back and let the ball go in a
perfect spiral right into the hands of Stuff Spencer who ran into the end zone for her first
touchdown!
The defense had a great game once again and kept the Cyclones on their heels. #15
Ebony Jones turned in another great performance and has been established as the 3rd
highest on the league tackles for loss list at 21.5.  #90 Alex Harvey also turned in a great
performance and finished 7th on the tackle for loss list at 14.5. Alex also had the opportunity
to play fullback in this game and showed some promise at the position going into the
off-season. #32 Venessa Martinez moved up on the league leader board with her second
fumble recovery in two weeks. #80 DJ Gay turned in another 5 tackles and scored a safety
on her 1 tackle for loss to add to her very consistent performances this season. It is also
noteworthy that the Mustangs offensive line was able to take a couple of snaps on defense.
What a way to finish!
This marks the end of the first season for the Lone Star Mustangs and the graduation
from rookie status to 1 year veterans for many of the Mustangs. Both the H-town Cyclones
and the Lone Star Mustangs are looking forward to another great season next year! Tryouts
have started in Houston already and will begin in Dallas/Fort Worth on October 3rd, 10th,
and 17th! Check back to this web site on the tryouts tab for more information!
Thank you to all of the fans and supporters of the Lone Star Mustangs this year!
