Sometimes the biggest test of a fighter comes not in the fight itself, but in how to deal with its aftermath.
This is especially true for fighters who have lost their first fight.
As up and coming female 145-pound fighter Emily “Timebomb” Thompson knows, there’s a lot that goes through a fighter’s head after such an event, having suffered the first defeat of her career at the hands of Erin Toughill in the PFC this past May.
“When you get your first loss, things definitely start churning through your head,” she said. “Am I doing the right thing? Is this what I’m supposed to be doing? Do I enjoy this?"
“I think that’s something a lot of fighters go through. People are always watching you when you come back, wanting to know if you’re coming back hungry, ready to whoop someone’s ass; or are you going to just sit there on their ass and kind of give up.”
Being the fighter that she is, Thompson feels she belongs among those who rise to a challenge rather than falter.
“I’m definitely not one to sit on my hands and not do anything about it,” she stated. “I am ready to jump back on the horse and ready to whoop someone’s ass.”
Thompson wasted no time in getting back into the mix of things, as she’s scheduled to face Jaime Seaton in a match that’s been a long time coming at this weekend’s Cage Combat FC event in San Francisco.
“I’ve been scheduled to fight her on more than one occasion and it never happened, so for some reason it’s happening now, which is fine by me,” stated Thompson. “She doesn’t have as many fights as I do, so I think I have the upper hand with that."
“I’ve been working on my stand-up game a lot, and I’m really confident in that, so if we stay standing, I’m okay with that. If I decide to take it to the ground, I have that cage there, so I should be able to finish my takedowns against the cage and that won’t be a problem (like it was in the Toughill fight).”
Should she rebound with a win this weekend, Thompson’s eyes are set on getting to the big stage of women’s MMA.
“I know that Strikeforce is building that now-official 145-pound division, and I’m just trying to work my way up (there),” she commented. “I don’t want to train for nothing – I want to keep fighting and see where it leads me.”
Not content to sit on the sidelines and lick her wounds, Emily Thompson is back in the game and eager to put her lone loss behind her.
“I want to thank my sponsors: MMAOverload, Fairtex, AdapTx Labs; and everyone at my gym, Nor-Cal Fighting Alliance,” she said. “I’m excited because it’s going to be streaming live online and all my friends and family will be able to see it."
“Luckily I came out (of my last fight) injury-free, still in good shape, and that’s why I’m taking this other fight so soon. There’s no reason to step off the horse. I just want to stay on and get a win under my belt as soon as possible.”

ChicagoMMA: UFC 100 is expected to garner a lot of mainstream media attention this weekend.  It will be a huge event with two title fights and the showdown between the coaches from TUF U.S.A vs. U.K. MMA fans are obviously outspoken about who will actually come away victorious.  The “L’il Bulldog” Felice Herrig shares her thoughts on what she thinks will happen on fight night.

This is great news, we are interviewing Sarah Kaufman today at SportsGeeks join us live in an hour.

Best Female Fighter: Sarah Kaufman

Kaufman (10-0) has separated herself from the pack with three wins in three fights, but you can’t make mention of fighter of the year honors on the female side without discussing Aug. 15’s showdown between Gina Carano and Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos. It doesn’t take a genius to suggest the winner between those two stands a good chance of being MMA’s top female fighter in ‘09. So let me suggest it.

mmafanhouse is reporting:

Strikeforce announced Wednesday that they will be holding a press conference at the WaMu Theatre inside New York City’s Madison Square Garden on July 14 to hype the August 15 fight between Gina Carano andCristiane Santos. The event is also open to the public.

Call me crazy, but I think that this is a historic moment for Strikeforce, mixed martial arts and, more specifically, women’s MMA.

Think about it: did you ever think that a promotion not named the UFC would hold a press conference at MSG with the main participants being two female fighters? I sure didn’t.

It should be noted that the UFC could probably hold a similar event at the WaMu Theatre if they wanted to. They once held a UFC 79 viewing party inside MSG, and have scheduled another one at Radio City Music Hall hosted by Frankie Edgar and Matt Hamill for UFC 100.

However, I’m pleasantly surprised to see Strikeforce take this major plunge into the New York City market while doing everything in their power to promote this mega-fight. Now I’m curious as to what kind of media turnout it will generate. One can probably hold a press conference anywhere, but if it isn’t attended by any significant media outlets, it’s probably not worth the effort.

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t anywhere near as significant as actually promoting an MMA event at MSG. Of course, that can’t happen just yet since the sport isn’t regulated in New York state (whenever you’re ready, guys). But kudos to Strikeforce for doing the next best thing by bringing two of its biggest stars to “The Mecca” to help bring a little more attention to their upstart promotion.

This will be cool.

Yes the war is brewing; so don’t forget this friday night on Showtime Shayna Baszler and Sarah Kaufman are going head to head and it is going to be a great match.

Shayna has talked a little smack here and there and Sarah has been pretty quiet, both women are on there way to Seattle for weighs in tomorrow and I know both are pretty much hungry, since interviewing them a few weeks ago.

Remember Shayna is using twitter to get the message and Sarah Kaufman is using her facebook to track on what she is doing. Just do a Bing Search and you can find out all details on those magnificent fighters.

I will be tweeting and writing up live blog reports on friday for the match, and I may do a live show we will see how this will turn out.

fightergirls.com boards are saying that

Well it looks like Carano & Cyborg will go 5 for 5 after all.

espngo
Five Ounces of Pain has learned that Strikeforce’s Aug. 15 women’s title bout between Gina Carano and Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos will go a full five rounds.

Ever better: Strikeforce has confirmed to ESPN that rounds will be a full five minutes in duration. About time. There appears to be evidence that females have a 10-15 percent lower oxygen consumption rate than men do, which conceivably could limit the kind of interval and muscular endurance performance that MMA demands, but is it really by so much that they needed competition duration reduced by nearly half?

Hopefully, subsequent women’s bouts will follow suit. If any division is in need of curtailed rounds for the safety of participants, it’s the sloppy super heavyweights. A blended cheeseburger is not a proper postworkout recovery drink.

This is the official press release from strikeforce:

LONG AWAITED STRIKEFORCE CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWDOWN

WITH CRIS “CYBORG” MARKS BIGGEST WOMEN’S FIGHT IN HISTORY

Saturday, August 15, Live on SHOWTIME at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT

From HP Pavilion, San Jose, Calif.;

Tickets Go On Sale Monday

NEW YORK (June 9, 2009)–After an eight month hiatus, mixed martial arts’ (MMA) leading lady, the undefeated and extremely popular Gina “Conviction” Carano (7-0) will compete in the first fight of her multi-fight agreement with STRIKEFORCE and is set to square off with rival powerhouse Cris “Cyborg” (7-1) in what is one of the most eagerly anticipated battles of all time, Saturday, August 15, live on SHOWTIME® at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

Carano and Cyborg, the consensus two best female fighters in the world, will be the first women in MMA history to headline a major MMA fight card. In addition, they will fight for the first STRIKEFORCE 145-pound Female Championship.

“I’m really excited to be coming back and to have a new home with Strikeforce,” said the 27-year-old Carano, whose combination of stunning looks and athleticism have cemented her role as the face of women’s MMA. In a Yahoo! online poll that named the “Top 10 Influential Women of 2008,” Carano ranked fifth, placing ahead of First Lady Michelle Obama and famed journalists Katie Couric and Barbara Walters.

“I’ve wanted this fight with Cyborg for a long time and so have the fans so it was important to me that it happen in my first fight back. I’ve been training hard the last few months and come August 15, I will be in the best shape of my life. This fight will absolutely deliver on all the hype.”

The live SHOWTIME telecast of STRIKEFORCE: “Carano vs. Cyborg” will begin at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT (tape delayed on the west coast) and will include up to five bouts.

Tickets for STRIKEFORCE: “Carano vs. Cyborg,” priced from $30, go on sale Monday at 10 a.m. PT at the HP Pavilion box office (408-287-7070) as well as at all Ticketmaster locations (800-745-3000), Ticketmaster online (www.ticketmaster.com <https://mail.svse.net/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.ticketmaster.com/> ), and the official STRIKEFORCE website (www.strikeforce.com <https://mail.svse.net/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.strikeforce.com/> ).

Carano has soared to superstardom over the last two years while dominating opponents live on CBS and SHOWTIME. She raised her profile further during a stint as “Crush” on NBC’s athletic competition series American Gladiators. Carano is represented by Wasserman Media Group.

The matchup with Cyborg will be the second start of Carano’s career under the STRIKEFORCE banner. On December 8, 2006, she turned the tides on a determined Elaina Maxwell, a protégé of Cung Le, and pulled out a unanimous judges’ decision at STRIKEFORCE: “Triple Threat.”

The media has emphatically shown its appreciation for Carano’s individuality. She has been prominently featured in a number of national magazines including Muscle And Fitness and Maxim. Big Biz Magazine voted her “The Hottest Woman In America” in its Spring 2008 issue and Maxim ranked her number 16 in its Hot 100 list published in May 2009. Carano has also been profiled in the popular ESPN documentary series E:60.

The 23-year-old Cyborg, who hails from Brazil, has established herself as Carano’s top rival by leveraging her superior strength and striking skills to pummel opponents. In her last start, also her Strikeforce debut, Cyborg manhandled Hitomi Akano on April 11, stalking and battering the Japanese fighter before finishing Akano at the 35 second mark of the third round.

Cyborg is a member of Brazil’s famed Chute Boxe fight squad and trains alongside her husband and fellow Strikeforce competitor, Evangelista “Cyborg.”

After co-promoting two events live on SHOWTIME in 2007 and 2008, STRIKEFORCE in March 2009 signed a multi-year agreement to stage live MMA events on the premium cable television network.

Yes that’s right everyone the fight between Carano and Cyborg is going to be for a belt! wow I was shocked to read this at fightergirls.com message boards which I think its awesome that its going to be for a belt, check this out

It’s been three months since StrikeForce acquired ProElite’s assets, however it wasn’t until this past Saturday at Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields that the San Jose-based organization announced that have come to terms with female superstar, Gina Carano.

“We look forward to having Gina back, and I think that Showtime and CBS did a fantastic job of teeing up this fight so that it’s a relevant fight in the sport,” Coker stated of their latest signing.

Before ProElite’s demise, EliteXC had tentatively scheduled the highly anticipated Carano vs. Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos bout for this past November, however due to their financial woes, they were forced to scrap the show.

Now that Coker officially has full access to both female sensations, he fully intends to pick up where EliteXC left off, as he will throw Carano immediately into the cage against Cyborg to headline their August 15 promotion.

“That’s going to be the No. 1 and the No. 2 female fighting in the world,” Coker said of the world’s two best women mixed martial artists. “It will be our first Strikeforce female title belt. We’re going to be proud to put that on.”

In case you missed that, not only did Coker just confirm that they will anoint their first women’s champ, but for the first time ever, a major MMA organization will have a female bout headline a big time event.

The show will also feature the lightweight rematch between champion Josh Thomson and Gilbert Melendez, as well as a title defense by Stikeforce’s heavyweight champion, Alistair Overeem.

So regardless of the star power that their male counterparts bring to the table, Coker states that this night will be ladies’ night.

“But that [Carano vs Cyborg] fight is a fight that I think fans around the country would want to see,” Coker said. “I think it’s going to be a fight of epic proportions. It’s been built up. It’s been teed up real nice.”
