Wow what a great post that Erin wrote to Roxy! I am so happy that all of these women stay behind each other no matter what the situation is! Women MMA fighters are the best and cannot wait for the next fight….Roxy your the best!

roxannemodafferi1 erintoughill

Congrats Roxy! ur a true warrior

Roxy,
This is long, so hold on lol Although you didn’t win, you showed what the sport of MMA needs more of: Gutsy, Tough, Tenacious Warrior female athletes who will fight anytime, anywhere and anyone. We have talked a few times over the years & iv always felt for you bc you have wanted nothing more than to compete in the sport you love.
You did the best you could with what you were given and you went out on a limb and took a big chance. Anything can happen in MMA and there is always the possibility of either side winning. You stepped up to the plate, and even though you didn’t win, you have nothing to be ashamed of.
IMO I don’t like seeing true 135ers having to come up in weight because they have NO other options. Its not right & its not always fair, but I commend you on being one of the few, true, competitive real athletes in womens MMA who always takes on any challenge or challenger.
I hope that SF sees the sacrifice that you and a few others have made for them, and that this shows your dedication to MMA. The 145 is such a tricky division bc bigger girls have to cut & smaller girls have to bulk up. There aren’t too many true 145ers, even lol
I wanna see more of the women who deserve to be signed to a big promotion like Roxy, Meisha, Tanya, Lana & other great Japanese MMAers. Its hard to know there are so many women who deserve to fight that are sitting on the sidelines waiting and waiting and waiting.

update: Carano vs cyborg 8/15/2009

I saw both fighter interviews on Showtime between Carano and Cyborg and they both looked great, they are ready to fight tonight, you can tell with the look in their eyes wow!

Watching all the matches tonight they were all good we are not just waiting for the big main event to come up.

Oh BTW Big John McCarthy is referring tonight; I wonder who is going to do the big main event?

Wow watching an interview with Jake Shields cool….

Now interview with Andre Ward cool

While waiting for the fight between Gina and Cris, heck I am even nervous and I am wondering if they are even more nervous. What do you think is going through their minds right now.

OMG just saw a Fedor commercial done by Showtime, OMG that was cool….

Hey UFC missing out eh! yeah you know you don’t have the number 1 fighter in the world anymore….I wonder what Dana White is saying hell I bet he is watching this fight right now, who wouldn’t be watching it….

Strikeforce M1 this fall on Showtime….featuring, Fedor, Bret Rogers, Jake and I am sure many more….hell yeah its on this fall….

Well the fight is fixing to start and as I get ready to watch I am going nuts right now, I hope Gina Carano does win, even though she is now the underdog….GO GINA!!!!!

I do have to say that this is the biggest fight in the world and finally Cris Cyborg has someone that matches her…

Cyborg comes out and is looking great…..a lot of people are cheering cyborg, that’s good….

Gina looks good! and ready to go!!! you can tell she is concentrating and that’s all she needs to do…

Here she comes, Carano with a thunderous ovation!! Randy Couture is right by her side….

Gina getting her last minute Vaseline on her face and now she enters the ring….

Jimmy Lennon Jr…introducing the fighters…..here we go….I cannot wait for this!! wooohooo…

This is being shown all over the world and its the best thing I have ever seen in the world!!!

I am so nervous right now……

Remember Cyborg is representing the south of the equator…..

Remember Carano is representing the north of the equator…

Josh Rosenthal referring

OMG OMG this first round is rocking

Gina is having hard time with Cyborg

Gina is getting out of every hold

but Gina looses…..

Cyborg has the power and it was way to much for Gina…she was just to small for Cyborg….

Sometimes the biggest test of a fighter comes not in the fight itself, but in how to deal with its aftermath.
This is especially true for fighters who have lost their first fight.
As up and coming female 145-pound fighter Emily “Timebomb” Thompson knows, there’s a lot that goes through a fighter’s head after such an event, having suffered the first defeat of her career at the hands of Erin Toughill in the PFC this past May.
“When you get your first loss, things definitely start churning through your head,” she said. “Am I doing the right thing? Is this what I’m supposed to be doing? Do I enjoy this?"
“I think that’s something a lot of fighters go through. People are always watching you when you come back, wanting to know if you’re coming back hungry, ready to whoop someone’s ass; or are you going to just sit there on their ass and kind of give up.”
Being the fighter that she is, Thompson feels she belongs among those who rise to a challenge rather than falter.
“I’m definitely not one to sit on my hands and not do anything about it,” she stated. “I am ready to jump back on the horse and ready to whoop someone’s ass.”
Thompson wasted no time in getting back into the mix of things, as she’s scheduled to face Jaime Seaton in a match that’s been a long time coming at this weekend’s Cage Combat FC event in San Francisco.
“I’ve been scheduled to fight her on more than one occasion and it never happened, so for some reason it’s happening now, which is fine by me,” stated Thompson. “She doesn’t have as many fights as I do, so I think I have the upper hand with that."
“I’ve been working on my stand-up game a lot, and I’m really confident in that, so if we stay standing, I’m okay with that. If I decide to take it to the ground, I have that cage there, so I should be able to finish my takedowns against the cage and that won’t be a problem (like it was in the Toughill fight).”
Should she rebound with a win this weekend, Thompson’s eyes are set on getting to the big stage of women’s MMA.
“I know that Strikeforce is building that now-official 145-pound division, and I’m just trying to work my way up (there),” she commented. “I don’t want to train for nothing – I want to keep fighting and see where it leads me.”
Not content to sit on the sidelines and lick her wounds, Emily Thompson is back in the game and eager to put her lone loss behind her.
“I want to thank my sponsors: MMAOverload, Fairtex, AdapTx Labs; and everyone at my gym, Nor-Cal Fighting Alliance,” she said. “I’m excited because it’s going to be streaming live online and all my friends and family will be able to see it."
“Luckily I came out (of my last fight) injury-free, still in good shape, and that’s why I’m taking this other fight so soon. There’s no reason to step off the horse. I just want to stay on and get a win under my belt as soon as possible.”

This is great news, we are interviewing Sarah Kaufman today at SportsGeeks join us live in an hour.

Best Female Fighter: Sarah Kaufman

Kaufman (10-0) has separated herself from the pack with three wins in three fights, but you can’t make mention of fighter of the year honors on the female side without discussing Aug. 15’s showdown between Gina Carano and Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos. It doesn’t take a genius to suggest the winner between those two stands a good chance of being MMA’s top female fighter in ‘09. So let me suggest it.

mmafanhouse is reporting:

Strikeforce announced Wednesday that they will be holding a press conference at the WaMu Theatre inside New York City’s Madison Square Garden on July 14 to hype the August 15 fight between Gina Carano andCristiane Santos. The event is also open to the public.

Call me crazy, but I think that this is a historic moment for Strikeforce, mixed martial arts and, more specifically, women’s MMA.

Think about it: did you ever think that a promotion not named the UFC would hold a press conference at MSG with the main participants being two female fighters? I sure didn’t.

It should be noted that the UFC could probably hold a similar event at the WaMu Theatre if they wanted to. They once held a UFC 79 viewing party inside MSG, and have scheduled another one at Radio City Music Hall hosted by Frankie Edgar and Matt Hamill for UFC 100.

However, I’m pleasantly surprised to see Strikeforce take this major plunge into the New York City market while doing everything in their power to promote this mega-fight. Now I’m curious as to what kind of media turnout it will generate. One can probably hold a press conference anywhere, but if it isn’t attended by any significant media outlets, it’s probably not worth the effort.

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t anywhere near as significant as actually promoting an MMA event at MSG. Of course, that can’t happen just yet since the sport isn’t regulated in New York state (whenever you’re ready, guys). But kudos to Strikeforce for doing the next best thing by bringing two of its biggest stars to “The Mecca” to help bring a little more attention to their upstart promotion.

This will be cool.

I was at the fightergirls.com message boards and found this great post on Megumi Fujii, If you do go the web link at the bottom of the page, the website is in Japanese and my have to translate:

Megum Fujii

Megum Fujii

probably felt, there is something she can do, and also, something she should do as one of the leaders of the industry.

Especially after what Megumi and her fellow fighters went through last year.

I am talking about how Smack Girl folded last year and that left almost all women MMA fighters in Japan with nowhere to fight, meaning nowhere to work.

At that point, DEEP was the only other Japanese promotion that was doing women’s MMA bouts but those spots are basically only for champions of DEEP which are MIKU and Satoko Shinashi.

Therefore the end of Smack Girl realistically meant complete unemployment for all girls in a sport called MMA in Japan.

And this terrible situation continued for a little over six months.

Imagine going through rigorous training everyday but not knowing if you can ever compete again?

“But this is the time we all have to train even harder so we can be prepare for anything. And also, this can be a good time to reevaluate myself both technically and mentally.”

That is what Megumi told me at the time. She was still training all the time, and is getting ready in case someone knocks on her door with a fight offer.

But training was not the only thing she did when Smack Girl closed its operation.

Megumi founded a publication that is specializing in covering women’s MMA.

Yes instead of just training and fighting she also stepped up to promote the entire industry.

It’s nothing extravagant nor fancy nor high budget.

But its more than apparent that this is her effort to do something for the sport she loves.

Megumi distributes this publication at shows but mainly it is available on the web. It consists of fighter’s interviews, event schedules, reports and photos from shows, to even very intriguing columns like “how to defend yourself with MMA techniques when you are assaulted by a thug.”

Its all about women’s MMA and needless to say it’s always good to have somewhere to go and check if you want to know anything about women’s MMA.

It maybe be surprising to some but in Japan there are no other publications that only cover’s women’s MMA so it’s still small but I must say, the publication is indeed historical and extremely meaningful for the sport.

By the way, the publication is called “Fight Again” and from the title, you can tell that it is about not letting women’s MMA die in Japan. Fighters will keep on fighting to keep the sport alive. And it’s also about all female MMA fighters’ wishes, which is to be able to fight again, and again, and again.

Fight Again-
