With all these articles coming out about Kerry Vera’s last win against Kim Couture and people are saying the Kerry is like the Gina Carano in the 135 division, I have to say wait! Stop the presses, many of these writers, bloggers, and columnist are way off base and need to do more research on Women’s MMA.
Yes they do say there are many other fighters out there, but they are not giving credit or saying names, either they are trying to save space when posting their articles for ads, or just don’t know who are they, they really need to pay attention who is what in Women’s MMA and look beyond the Gina’s and Kerry’s and focus on the other fighter’s out there.
They never mention Erin Toughill, Tara LaRosa or Sarah Kaufman, what about Elaina Maxwell, Roxanne Modafferi, Shayna Baszler, Kelly Kobold, Marloes Coenen, and Cindy Dandois who are ranked in position that need to be mentioned, I just wish these writers would make some effort about writing about these fighters instead of just talking who they choose, these other fighters are some of the best in the world and they seem to forget about that. Yes Kerry kick a$$ this past weekend but that was not the only fight of the weekend, Tara LaRosa vs Valerie Coolbaugh fought and Tara won by a submission and by many many people over at fightergirls.com message board believe that Tara LaRosa is number 1 P4P in the world and they never write about that, come on writers show some love for the other fighters out there instead of being picky.
Women’s MMA is here to stay for a long time and is not going anywhere. People need to understand that the women fight just as hard as the men and never get recognition from these writer’s over at sherdog, and many other places on the net. Wake up everyone this is not the 1950’s its the year 2009 and we need to show that we are capable of talking about women being in the ring or cage fighting just like the men.
I have been covering women’s professional sports for 2 years and will never cover anything else, these women put their blood, sweat, tears, just like the guys and they are proud of what they do and some cases can do better then the men.
Check out some of the interviews that me and MarQ have done over at SportsGeeks and see what these women are really about, instead of talking about their looks, they are way more than that, if you want to learn more about womens mma or even womens tackle football do some research and you will see that there are many women out there working hard.

After 18 months away, knockout artist Kaitlin Young returns to mixed martial arts competition on December 11th against undefeated challenger Shana Olsen as part of the Treasure Island “Ironman” card at the Treasure Island Resort and Casino in Welch, Minnesota.
The 140-pound catchweight bout will be a featured attraction on the card and marks Young’s first fight since she was defeated by Gina Carano at EliteXC: “Primetime” on CBS in May of 2008 when the ringside physician stopped the fight after the second round.
Young (4-2-0) rose to fame as an overnight sensation when she captured the 2007 HOOKnSHOOT Women’s Grand Prix with three devastating knockouts in a combined time of just 1:45.
Among her victims was current rising star and Freestyle Cage Fighting Women’s 135-Pound Champion Miesha “Takedown” Tate, whose head-kick knockout became a staple of highlight reels for months to come.
Young was originally set to face undefeated Canadian standout Sarah Kaufman at an EliteXC event in late 2008, but the fight was cancelled when the promotion folded.
During her time away from MMA, the Tae Kwon Do and Muay Thai standout completed her schooling at the University of Minnesota, where she majored in Kinesiology, and began teaching strength and conditioning at a girls’ volleyball club.
Young will face a tough test in the unknown but undefeated Olsen, who will look to make an instant name for herself at Young’s expense.
Olsen (1-0-0) debuted in mixed martial arts in May of this year and picked up a first-round submission win due to strikes. A talented striker, Olsen may choose to engage in a stand-up war with Young.
The single mother works as an ER nurse when not fighting and requested the fight with Young, despite giving up a significant edge in experience.
Clearly not afraid of a challenge, Olsen will aim to keep her undefeated record intact against the devastating striking power of Young.
Young and Olsen will square off as part of the “Ironman” MMA card at the Treasure Island Resort and Casino in Welch, Minnesota on December 11th. The event begins at 7:00 P.M.

Wow what a great post that Erin wrote to Roxy! I am so happy that all of these women stay behind each other no matter what the situation is! Women MMA fighters are the best and cannot wait for the next fight….Roxy your the best!
Congrats Roxy! ur a true warrior
Roxy,
This is long, so hold on lol Although you didn’t win, you showed what the sport of MMA needs more of: Gutsy, Tough, Tenacious Warrior female athletes who will fight anytime, anywhere and anyone. We have talked a few times over the years & iv always felt for you bc you have wanted nothing more than to compete in the sport you love.
You did the best you could with what you were given and you went out on a limb and took a big chance. Anything can happen in MMA and there is always the possibility of either side winning. You stepped up to the plate, and even though you didn’t win, you have nothing to be ashamed of.
IMO I don’t like seeing true 135ers having to come up in weight because they have NO other options. Its not right & its not always fair, but I commend you on being one of the few, true, competitive real athletes in womens MMA who always takes on any challenge or challenger.
I hope that SF sees the sacrifice that you and a few others have made for them, and that this shows your dedication to MMA. The 145 is such a tricky division bc bigger girls have to cut & smaller girls have to bulk up. There aren’t too many true 145ers, even lol
I wanna see more of the women who deserve to be signed to a big promotion like Roxy, Meisha, Tanya, Lana & other great Japanese MMAers. Its hard to know there are so many women who deserve to fight that are sitting on the sidelines waiting and waiting and waiting.

Finally someone has listened to the greater masses and Roxy is getting her strikeforce debut against Marloes Coenen who is also getting her debut in strikeforce. Roxanne who is 13-4-0 who won her last fight against Chisa Yonezawa at a Valkerie promotion back in November of 2008.![]()
I talked to Roxy just a few minutes via chat room said she was “thrilled” and cannot wait to get to the states sometime Monday or Tuesday, she posted on fightergirls.com that her work let her off for the fight on Saturday in which the main event is Fedor vs Brett, the fight will be a undercard but I bet we will see some of the action during the main event action. I am hoping to get another interview with Roxanne before the fight, if not I will get another interview when she gets back to Japan and settled in.
Marloes Coenen who was supposed to fight Erin Toughill, which Erin had to back out due to illness, will be ready for Roxy. I have not had the chance to interview Marloes, hopefully soon we will be able too.
Roxy is a great choice for coming into Strikeforce who is ranked 4th in the world according to GOWAMMA website and will put on a great show she has some skill and talent that many people will get to see!!

A 145-pound rematch between Erin Toughill and Marloes Coenen all but finalized for the untelevised portion of Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers on CBS on Nov. 7 in suburban Chicago.
Multiple sources close to negotiations on Friday told MMAWeekly.com that while the bout has not been finalized, both fighters have agreed to the fight and are currently reviewing bout agreements.
If signed, the women’s bout would serve as the final fight before the event goes live on CBS at 9 p.m. EST. Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers headlines the event.
Toughill (10-2-1) drew first blood in the pairing with a knockout victory over Coenen in December 2004 at the all-women Japanese MMA promotion Smackgirl (the promotion has since been renamed Jewels).
Toughill, 32, was in August under consideration for Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg as a possible alternate to headliners Gina Carano and Cristiante “Cyborg” Santos, but was unable to come to terms with the promotion. The "American Gladiators" alum last fought in May at the now defunct Palace Fighting Championships, defeating Emily Thompson by unanimous decision.
The 28-year-old Coenen (16-3) last fought in January, losing a unanimous decision to Cindy Dandois at "Beast of the East" in her native country of Netherlands. She was tentatively scheduled to take on 145-pound champion Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos during the televised portion of the Nov. 7 card, but an injury to Santos scrapped that option.
The winner of the bout between Toughill and Coenen would like be the next challenger for Santos’ title.
