Tonight Sarah Kaufman brings home another gold medal in way of title belt for Canada and she did with power. Sarah Kaufman fighting against a tough competitor Takayo Hashi jabbed her way to the title of the welterweight 135lb division and did it with style. We usually see Sarah with a good ground and pound game especially from other fighters but the last three fights that Sarah has fought have gone the distance and tonight was no different.
Sarah dominating the fight from the beginning with jabs and some great right hands to the head of Hashi proved to make the fight a lot more interesting than what we are used to seeing in Kaufman. During her post fight interview Kaufman goes on to say that she apologizes for the way the fight went and said that this was the only way the fight could go. Hashi tried in the later rounds to take down Kaufman but as usual she always has the perfect defense for the take down in her sprawling technique.
Kaufman needed 5 rounds to win the title which show to be a little unusual since Sarah has 8KO’s in previous and like I said earlier she went the distance in the last three. Kaufman was ecstatic to put the belt and is ready to take on any challenger that is coming her way. According to Strikeforce there is going to be a 135lb tournament in which the winner will have a chance at the belt that Sarah Kaufman has now.
Now what does Sarah do, well as many of us in the FeMMA world we like to think that Sarah’s first title defense is going to be against number 3 ranked Roxanne Modafferi coming off her last win against Molly Helsel, Roxy looks to be in the next sport to fight Sarah and this will make Roxy a little more comfortable in the division she is supposed to be in. We do have to remember that Roxy fought Marloes Coenen and really had to gain weight for that fight and even though she lost Roxy showed so much courage for even taking the fight.
So what’s next for Sarah, I am sure she is going to head out to a nice restaurant and eat a good meal then head back to Canada for more training to defend her title in the coming months.

STRIKEFORCE CHALLENGERS 6: FEBRUARY 26, 2010 ON SHOWTIME
venue: The Civic Auditorium in San Jose, California
Main Bouts (On Showtime):
-Sarah Kaufman def. Takayo Hashi by Unanimous Decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45), R5
Takayo Hashi loses to Sarah Kaufman by unanimous decision in the Strikeforce Welterweight Championship tonight. Takayo was very emotional after the fight when looking at the camera it seemed that Takayo was really wanting to win this fight especially coming all the way from Japan. She wanted to show that women from Japan are just as good as the fighters in any part of the world.
Watching the fight Takayo was trying to stand up to Sarah and it was not what Takayo wanted but had to do something different which I think Takayo was watching video of Sarah other matches showing that Sarah has a perfect defense for take down moves. Every time Takayo wanted to go to the ground Sarah countered with a perfect sprawl and Takayo was dumbfounded on that move since she could not find a way to get Sarah on the ground.
Talking to our MMA expert MarQ-News Editor from fightergirls.com he said “That it looks like Takayo wanted to tire out Sarah” he goes on to say that the strategy did not work well for Takayo.
This fight was not the fastest in most women’s mma fights so it did go the distance and Takayo did her best to make the fight go to the ground which is Takayo specialty. She did a great job on hanging in there with Kaufman throwing some devastating jabs and right hand punches. It looked like that Takayo did everything right but for some reason she just couldn’t get Kaufman to the ground at all.
Congrats to Takayo from coming all the way from Japan and fighting the number 1 ranked fighter in the 135lb division. She did all she could do to win the fight but just could not do her game like she wanted.
While watching an interview with Strikeforce’s Herschel Walker on CS6, It was something that I could not believe that happened, Herschel during the interview, “I think MMA is the toughest sport and these MEN are courageous for getting in the ring and hanging in there”
OMG come on! the main event is a women’s bout and it seems that he said that they men are the only ones there, that is not really what women’s mma want for one of their fighters to say that its just a man’s game but needs to show that there are female fighters there fighting just as hard as the men.
I know it might not mean nothing, but come on again the Main Event is a women’s bout!
SportsGeeks
Today is the day for the 135lb welterweight title for Strikeforce and this fight is going to be a good one. Strikeforce announced a few days that this fight was moved up to the main event of the show. This will be the 3rd time in history that a women’s bout was made into a main event and this event is going to have many women fighter that are in the 135lb division watching like a hawk.
There are many fighters in the 135lb division in which me and MarQ believe right now is stacked, since some fighters choose to leave the 145lb division to fight in the lower weights and plus many want to take a crack at the #1 P4P Sarah Kaufman in the coming future.
Yesterday Kaufman and Hashi weighed in at respective weights of 132(Hashi) 133.8(Kaufman) well below the 135 limit which is actually surprising but not uncommon, both fighters I am sure are heading over the eatery and pigging out a little and drinking pedialite like most women fighters do after weigh-ins.
Well in a about a few hours both fighters will be heading to the forum to get in their rituals before the fights and I am sure both fighters are nervous but ready to fight like they have never done before. Strikeforce made a great decision making this fight a main event. These fighters have been waiting for an opportunity to fight for a title especially one that will be televised with many eyes watching from around the world and even in Canada.
I will be live blogging the event tonight in our forum over at BackStage Radio Lounge.

When Sarah Kaufman and Takayo Hashi step into the cage at Friday night’s Strikeforce Challengers card on Showtime, it will mark the second time that Strikeforce has given the main event to the ladies on a card otherwise made up of male fighters.
The first time — Gina Carano vs. Cris Cyborg in August — it felt like a big deal. This time it just feels like the logical fit, as the Kaufman vs. Hashi 135-pound title fight is the best bout on the card. And in a strange way, the fact that Kaufman vs. Hashi isn’t such a big deal might be a sign that women’s MMA has moved from novelty to widely accepted athletic competition.
"Showtime has been a great platform for the females to be exposed, and they’ve proven that they’re great athletes," said Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker. "Good female fighters are out there. Are there more men? Of course. There are more male fighters than female fighters. But there are great female fighters out there that no one knows about and the platform that Showtime and CBS provide will expose them to a large audience."
The Ultimate Fighting Championship doesn’t promote female fights, and that has opened the door to Strikeforce becoming the industry leader for women’s MMA. Coker said it hasn’t always been easy to find high-quality female fighters, but that he believes his promotion is building quality women’s divisions at 135 and 145 pounds.
Toward that end, Strikeforce will launch eight-woman tournaments in those two weight classes this summer, with the winners getting title shots. Prior to that, Kaufman vs. Hashi will determine the Strikeforce 135-pound champion, and 145-pound champion Cris Cyborg will face Erin Toughill.
"We’re going to scour the earth for our tournaments, and the winners will be able to challenge the champions in our 135 and 145-pound weight divisions," Coker said. "Then we’re also going to start a 125-pound weight division."
The 125-pound division may include Tara LaRosa, considered by many to be America’s best female fighter.
"The reason we didn’t have a deal with Tara LaRosa is that we weren’t doing fights at 125 pounds," Coker said. "We’ve been focusing on the 135s and the 145s. When we do 125s, we’d be interested in Tara LaRosa."
For now, Strikeforce has one outstanding female champion in Cyborg, and will add another worthy title holder on Friday night.
Erin Toughill Melanson Why is women’s MMA so "in" and "mainstream", but no one wants to step up and fight each other?? I hear all these Fem "fighters" say they’ll be such "great additions" to Strikeforce or they feel they are ready to fight "bigger names", but when they get asked? They’re either "BUSY" or "HURT"? WTF? Great way to keep women’s MMA rolling. Tired of the SH*T.
Dutch mixed martial artist Marloes Coenen says she can beat Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos on the feet.
"I will not step aside for anyone, and I will definitely not step aside for Cyborg," Coenen told me today. "If she will come out banging, I will do the same."
In just her second fight for Strikeforce, Coenen finds herself set for a Jan. 30 bout in Miami against Santos, the promotion’s 145-pound women’s champion. Coenen made her U.S. debut in November with a first-round armbar of Roxanne Modafferi, at Strikeforce’s show in the Chicago suburb of Hoffman Estates, Ill.
Super Channel, Canada’s only national pay television network, is pleased to announce an exclusive agreement to offer SHOWTIME Sports® telecasts of STRIKEFORCE Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) events live to viewers across Canada, beginning Saturday, Dec.19.
“Super Channel is striving to offer Canadians programming they can’t get anywhere else and we saw an excellent opportunity in bringing live MMA to viewers from coast-to-coast and knew it would be well received,” said Sandy Perkins, Super Channel’s Vice President Programming. “We are very pleased to add SHOWTIME Sports® and STRIKEFORCE MMA to our roster with an exclusive deal and will be rounding out our Super Channel Fights! lineup. They are a great team to have in our corner.”
“Canadian fans have consistently shown a deep appreciation for MMA, so to have the opportunity to bring live STRIKEFORCE action to this market on a regular basis on an outstanding, high definition platform like Super Channel is very exciting," said STRIKEFORCE Founder and CEO Scott Coker.
Friday night was the night that Women’s MMA made another mark into history, with more coverage and articles and being able to buy a match for online viewing and then watching another fight on Showtime just made the night even better.
Tara LaRosa (18-1) against Valerie Coolbaugh (4-2) at the “Locked in the Cage” main event in Philadelphia Friday night was a great match that I got to watch, spending seven bucks on the fight was well worth it, also saw some great amateur fights before the main event. If you missed the fight for some reason you can view it here: fight. Right from the start both fighters looked confident and of course the hometown crowd did not take to well to Valerie she moved on with pride and confidence and made me proud that I got to interview her before her fight with Tara. Tara according to my buddy MarQ-News Editor from fightergirls.com says that Tara is pound for pound #1 fighter in the world in the 125lbs division. I do have to say that I disagree a little, I still think Sarah Kaufman (10-0) is #1 in the world. Tara did a great job against Valerie and put her down 3:35 in the first round with a rear naked choked. Congrats to both fighters you made another dent in Women’s MMA! Keep up the great work.
Another big fight was on Friday and it was a fight to remember, Kerry Vera (2-0) goes against Kim Couture (1-2), again if you missed the fight you can view it here: Fight. Both fighters looked confident and ready to battle and a battle it was, right from the beginning both fighters were feeling each other out and then the punches flew, Kim stayed with her game plan and Kerry was backed up a few times and Kerry did say after the match “She hit me and I thought to myself I need to get going here”, Kerry then made Kim pay for that hit, she got the upper advantage closer to the end of the round with some great punches to Kim’s face and the right at 3:30 mark in the round Kerry finished her off with a flurry of punches and Kim goes down like a log at 3:35 mark and the ref had to stop the fight to protect the fighter. So overall Showtime put on a great show and that fight is in the history books now.
Again check out Kerry Vera’s interview with SportsGeeks before her fight with Kim. Interview
Don’t forget you can check out Kaitlin at SportsGeeks, Rammy and MarQ interviewed Kaitlin so you can check out the archived show here: Kaitlin Young as always you can download the show to iPod or Microsoft Zune if you don’t want to stay at the website. Thank you

After 18 months away, knockout artist Kaitlin Young returns to mixed martial arts competition on December 11th against undefeated challenger Shana Olsen as part of the Treasure Island “Ironman” card at the Treasure Island Resort and Casino in Welch, Minnesota.
The 140-pound catchweight bout will be a featured attraction on the card and marks Young’s first fight since she was defeated by Gina Carano at EliteXC: “Primetime” on CBS in May of 2008 when the ringside physician stopped the fight after the second round.
Young (4-2-0) rose to fame as an overnight sensation when she captured the 2007 HOOKnSHOOT Women’s Grand Prix with three devastating knockouts in a combined time of just 1:45.
Among her victims was current rising star and Freestyle Cage Fighting Women’s 135-Pound Champion Miesha “Takedown” Tate, whose head-kick knockout became a staple of highlight reels for months to come.
Young was originally set to face undefeated Canadian standout Sarah Kaufman at an EliteXC event in late 2008, but the fight was cancelled when the promotion folded.
During her time away from MMA, the Tae Kwon Do and Muay Thai standout completed her schooling at the University of Minnesota, where she majored in Kinesiology, and began teaching strength and conditioning at a girls’ volleyball club.
Young will face a tough test in the unknown but undefeated Olsen, who will look to make an instant name for herself at Young’s expense.
Olsen (1-0-0) debuted in mixed martial arts in May of this year and picked up a first-round submission win due to strikes. A talented striker, Olsen may choose to engage in a stand-up war with Young.
The single mother works as an ER nurse when not fighting and requested the fight with Young, despite giving up a significant edge in experience.
Clearly not afraid of a challenge, Olsen will aim to keep her undefeated record intact against the devastating striking power of Young.
Young and Olsen will square off as part of the “Ironman” MMA card at the Treasure Island Resort and Casino in Welch, Minnesota on December 11th. The event begins at 7:00 P.M.

Wow what a great post that Erin wrote to Roxy! I am so happy that all of these women stay behind each other no matter what the situation is! Women MMA fighters are the best and cannot wait for the next fight….Roxy your the best!
Congrats Roxy! ur a true warrior
Roxy,
This is long, so hold on lol Although you didn’t win, you showed what the sport of MMA needs more of: Gutsy, Tough, Tenacious Warrior female athletes who will fight anytime, anywhere and anyone. We have talked a few times over the years & iv always felt for you bc you have wanted nothing more than to compete in the sport you love.
You did the best you could with what you were given and you went out on a limb and took a big chance. Anything can happen in MMA and there is always the possibility of either side winning. You stepped up to the plate, and even though you didn’t win, you have nothing to be ashamed of.
IMO I don’t like seeing true 135ers having to come up in weight because they have NO other options. Its not right & its not always fair, but I commend you on being one of the few, true, competitive real athletes in womens MMA who always takes on any challenge or challenger.
I hope that SF sees the sacrifice that you and a few others have made for them, and that this shows your dedication to MMA. The 145 is such a tricky division bc bigger girls have to cut & smaller girls have to bulk up. There aren’t too many true 145ers, even lol
I wanna see more of the women who deserve to be signed to a big promotion like Roxy, Meisha, Tanya, Lana & other great Japanese MMAers. Its hard to know there are so many women who deserve to fight that are sitting on the sidelines waiting and waiting and waiting.

Kick @$$ day # 2
Current mood: energetic
So yesterday we had the press conference, and it turns out we were the only undercard members there. But I got to chat with a lot of pro fighters and get their autographs. Gegard is really nice. XD And KIRIK IS HERE! My beloved COACH! *superhugglomp*!!!!!!! And I got interviewed by Frank Shamrock and people
Sir Mayhem is cool. I was a fan before, but now I am a BIG fan!
He is also slightly insane but it’s part of his charm!
Kirik, Roxy, Frank Shamrock
sir Mayhem and I
Anderson ‘bigfoot’ Silva and his group and I
Brett Rogers and I! He’s really cool! lol when I introduced myself, he said, "You’re not a fighter!" I said, "Yes I am!" and he said, "No you ain’t! Here lemme see your hands!" and even the calloused knuckles didn’t convince him. but then I gave him my business card and website and he was like "ooooh cool."
Dude shook hands with Mr. Bigfoot…his hand was HUGE! It was like FIVE TIMES the size of mine, LOL.
At the press conference we didn’t get to sit on the podium. actually, Marloes and I sat in the audience…next to each other. lol We were whispering back and forth about various things, it was funny. Then when we did the face off, she gave a killer look like "I’m gonna knee your face" and squeezed my hand hard…I got really excited about that. If I could make a mean face, I would, but my ‘mean’ face looks neutral at best…so I just smile. I CAN’T WAIT. I just wanna get in there!!
